In an effort to tackle passenger extortion at airports, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Kabir Mohammed, has disclosed measures to tackle irregularities at major international airports across the nation particularly the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the country.
Mr. Mohammed disclosed these efforts during a one-day Airport Council International (ACI) Service Quality event held in Lagos. He emphasized that “mystery staff” have been strategically stationed to observe and address any instances of extortion at the four international airports. The move is part of FAAN’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and reputation of Nigeria’s airports.
Addressing concerns related to the Yuletide season, Mohammed issued a stern warning, stating that individuals caught engaging in extortion activities during this period would face disciplinary consequences. This proactive approach aims to ensure a smooth and secure travel experience for passengers during the festive season.
During the ACI ASQ sensitization event, organized by the Directorate of Airport Operations, discussions revolved around addressing challenges and implementing suggestions to enhance the overall image of the airports. The event witnessed the participation of top management, representatives from government agencies, and concessionaires.
Mr. Mohammed reminded all government agencies operating within the airport premises about the presence of surveillance cameras and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to further strengthen the airport’s reputation. The concerted focus on improving service quality aligns with the goal of creating a positive and efficient environment for both domestic and international travelers.
As the Yuletide season approaches, FAAN’s initiative underscores a commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and a seamless travel experience for passengers at Nigerian airports. The introduction of “mystery staff” and a heightened focus on monitoring activities aim to deter extortion and uphold the standards of service delivery.
