NIMC’s spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, has warned the public to avoid five websites flagged by the commission for allegedly collecting Nigerians’ personal data without permission. The flagged websites are:
TrackMyNIN.com , ConfirmNIN.com, GetMyNIN.com, CheckYourNIN.com, and VerifyYourNIN.com
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) had flagged these websites, highlighting the potential for them to be scams designed to illicitly collect personal information.
This announcement follows concerns raised by the Paradigm Initiative regarding the sale of personal data such as National Identification Numbers (NIN), Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), and International Passports on unauthorized sites.
Paradigm Initiative reported that personal data was being sold for as low as ₦100, raising alarms about the risks of identity theft, financial fraud, and other serious threats.
The organization emphasized the potential danger to individuals and the national economy, with fears that such data could be exploited by criminals, including burglars, kidnappers, and terrorists.
In response, the NIMC reassured Nigerians that their sensitive data remains secure and uncompromised. They emphasized that only approved partners are authorized to verify NINs and cautioned against using unauthorized websites.
The Commission is actively collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute fake vendors, promising strict legal action against offenders. NIMC urges everyone to remain vigilant and trust in the Commission’s robust security measures.
