FIRS Says E-Invoicing Will Boost Access to Credit for Nigerian Manufacturers

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially launched an electronic invoicing solution (e-invoicing) aimed at transforming tax payment processes in Nigeria. The system, known as the Merchant-Buyer Model (MBM), is designed to make tax compliance easier, faster, and more transparent for all categories of taxpayers.

According to a statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman, Zacch Adedeji, the e-invoicing platform went live on August 1 after a successful pilot phase that began in November 2024.

The first phase targets large taxpayers—companies with an annual turnover of ₦5 billion or more. In less than two weeks since its launch, no fewer than 1,000 companies, representing 20 percent of over 5,000 eligible firms, have begun integrating with the FIRS MBM platform.

The remaining large taxpayers are expected to complete their onboarding and integration processes by November 1, the set deadline for full compliance. FIRS says the initiative is a key step towards modernising Nigeria’s tax system, improving transparency, and boosting government revenue.
