Seplat Energy Urges Affordable, Reliable Energy for All to Drive Nigeria’s Prosperity

Seplat Energy PLC has called for affordable, reliable, and accessible energy as a cornerstone for building a prosperous Nigeria. The statement was made by Samson Ezugworie, Chief Operating Officer of Seplat Energy, during the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) Annual International Conference & Exhibition in Lagos.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Revitalizing the Nigerian Petroleum Exploration and Production: Strategies for Energy Security and Sustainable Development”, Ezugworie highlighted Nigeria’s urgent energy challenges:

“Today, more than 70 million Nigerians still lack access to electricity. More than 170 million people rely on biomass for cooking… With Nigeria’s population projected to reach 237 million by 2025 and 400 million by 2050, the urgency to act is undeniable.”

He emphasized that addressing these issues requires boosting oil production, harnessing gas reserves, and expanding gas and NGL production to power industries, provide clean cooking, and reduce reliance on polluting imported generators.

Ezugworie noted a significant shift in Nigeria’s energy sector, where local operators are taking control of previously international-held assets. He said this transition presents both challenges and opportunities, including building local knowledge, resilient partnerships, and an industry owned and managed by Nigerians for Nigerians.

“At Seplat Energy, we believe the future of Nigerian production lies in three core principles: Leadership, Partnership, and Stewardship,” he stated. Ezugworie also detailed the company’s operational successes: rehabilitating 26 of 33 wells producing around 33,000 barrels, and progress on gas projects such as the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, upgraded Sapele Gas Plant, and LPG shipments.

He underscored Seplat Energy’s commitment to ending routine flaring, reducing emissions, and capturing gas for monetization, describing these initiatives as a win-win for the environment, communities, and national growth.

“Our progress on gas initiatives like ANOH, Sapele, and LPG shipments is a testament to our commitment to Nigeria’s prosperity. These projects are not just about energy; they are about transforming lives and powering Nigeria’s development,” Ezugworie concluded.

Seplat Energy’s interventions demonstrate the critical role of sustainable oil and gas development in achieving energy security and driving Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.
