Somaliland’s President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, used the World Economic Forum in Davos to position his self-governing region as a viable destination for global investment.
During separate meetings with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Eric Trump, Abdullahi highlighted investment opportunities across livestock, agriculture, logistics, and energy infrastructure.
The discussions follow Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland, making it the first country to extend official recognition to the region—a significant milestone in Somaliland’s decades-long quest for international legitimacy.
Officials said Somaliland’s new strategy focuses less on seeking foreign aid and more on presenting tangible economic opportunities. Central to this plan is the deep-water port of Berbera, envisioned as a regional trade hub to boost commerce and economic independence.
The push for investment aims to strengthen Somaliland’s economic self-sufficiency while reinforcing its case for broader international recognition, even as Israel’s recognition continues to stir political debate.
