FG Unveils Measures to Strengthen Nigeria’s Gas-to-Power Value Chain

The Federal Government has announced new measures to reinforce Nigeria’s gas-to-power value chain, emphasising natural gas as the backbone of electricity supply and a key driver of the country’s industrialisation agenda.

Speaking at the National Gas Day session of the 9th Nigeria International Energy Summit 2026 in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, highlighted that gas currently powers over 70 per cent of Nigeria’s on-grid electricity generation. However, structural weaknesses in supply, infrastructure, and commercial arrangements have limited efficient power delivery to homes and industries.

“The administration of President Bola Tinubu is deliberately reinforcing the entire gas-to-power ecosystem to support economic growth, industrial productivity, and energy security,” Ekpo said during the ministerial address.

As part of efforts to promote clean energy adoption, Ekpo also announced the expansion of the free liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder distribution programme to all six geopolitical zones. The initiative aims to deepen clean cooking adoption, reduce deforestation, and decrease household dependence on firewood and charcoal.

The government’s strategy underscores a holistic approach to strengthening the gas-to-power sector while fostering sustainable energy use and industrial development nationwide.
