98% of Taxpayers Report Seamless Experience on New Tax ID Portal — JRB

The Joint Revenue Board has disclosed that more than 98 per cent of taxpayers who retrieved their Tax Identification Numbers through the newly launched national portal reported a seamless experience.

The Board made this known in a statement titled “Taxpayers Thumbs-up New Tax ID Portal, as JRB Races on With Implementation of Tax Reforms.”

The Tax ID portal, jointly managed by the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigeria Revenue Service, was launched on January 1, 2026, as Nigeria’s centralised taxpayer database.

The platform allows individuals to generate a unique 13-digit Tax ID using their National Identity Number. Businesses can retrieve their Tax IDs using registration numbers issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission and other designated agencies.

The initiative aims to harmonise fragmented taxpayer records across federal and state systems into a single database. It is designed to improve coordination, strengthen revenue administration, and enhance data security.

The reform forms part of the broader fiscal measures under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to the statement, feedback was collected through a structured questionnaire shared on Facebook, X, Instagram and WhatsApp. The Help Desk team also conducted telephone interviews with users who had attempted to retrieve their Tax IDs.

The Head of the JRB Help Desk team, Effiong Abasifreke, said respondents were asked four questions to assess the speed, ease of navigation, convenience and overall experience.

“At the end of the poll, we collated all the responses and analysed them. More than 98 per cent of the respondents said they had a seamless experience retrieving their Tax ID,” he stated.

Individual and corporate taxpayers participated in the survey. Respondents described the portal as fast, simple and easy to navigate, with some noting that their Tax IDs were generated within seconds of inputting their details.

Corporate users also commended the platform for its fast-loading time and convenience.

Speaking on the nationwide rollout, the Executive Secretary of the JRB, Olusegun Adesokan, urged taxpayers who had yet to retrieve their Tax IDs to do so via the official portal.

He said the system was designed as a secure self-service platform and complies with the regulations of the Nigerian Data Protection Commission.

Adesokan dismissed claims that financial institutions would use the new Tax ID framework to deduct funds arbitrarily from customers’ accounts.

He reiterated that the ongoing tax reforms are “pro-poor and pro-growth,” adding that they provide incentives for low-income earners and businesses.

According to him, implementation of the reforms has commenced at both national and subnational levels, with the JRB collaborating with partner agencies to ensure smooth execution.

The Board called for continued public cooperation, stressing that sustained engagement with taxpayers is critical to building a more coordinated, transparent and efficient revenue system nationwide.
