The Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association (NPMA), an umbrella body representing about 58 markets in Lagos State, has called on the state government to assist its members following a devastating fire incident.
The association’s president, Chinedu Ukatu, made the appeal in a statement, urging the government to provide compensation and support to victims of the recent fire at Great Nigeria House in Balogun Market.
According to the association, the fire, which occurred on December 24, 2025, destroyed shops, goods and sources of income, leaving many traders in financial ruin. It added that lives were lost in the incident, with several affected individuals being family breadwinners.
“On behalf of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association (NPMA) Lagos, I am appealing for immediate compensation and support for the victims of the recent devastating fire incident at Great Nigeria House in Balogun Market, Lagos Island, Lagos,” the statement read.
The association urged the Federal Government to provide financial assistance to help affected traders rebuild their businesses. It also appealed for palliatives for traders whose shops were cordoned off pending the evacuation of the damaged building.
According to NPMA, many of the affected traders currently have no alternative means of livelihood due to restricted access to their business premises.
While expressing appreciation for the efforts of the Lagos State Government, the association pledged its cooperation in implementing preventive measures to avert future incidents.
NPMA further called on the committee set up by the state government to fast-track the evacuation process at the affected building, to enable traders resume business activities as soon as possible.
