The Federal Government of Nigeria has said that state governments account for approximately 48 per cent of total public expenditure in Nigeria, underlining the need for stronger coordination across all tiers of government to meet national economic development objectives.
The disclosure was made by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, while receiving the newly appointed Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, who resumed duties on Monday.
According to a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Julie Osagie-Jacobs, Bagudu emphasised that effective policy coordination between federal, state, and local governments is essential to drive national development.
“The minister recalled recent discussions of the National Economic Council, which identified several key policy priorities aimed at accelerating national development, including improved coordination among federal, state, and local governments, especially since state governments account for about 48 per cent of public expenditure,” the statement read.
Bagudu also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to achieving the administration’s goal of growing Nigeria’s economy to $1 trillion by 2030, stressing that collaboration among all tiers of government would be critical to realising this target.
