NUPRC Enforces ‘Drill or Drop’ Rule to End Oil Block Hoarding

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission(NUPRC) has signed a Petroleum Exploration Licence No. 5 agreement with SeaSeis Geophysical Limited, authorising the company to undertake the acquisition and processing of new 3D seismic and gravity data.

The project will be executed in partnership with the commission and TGS, a global energy data and intelligence company.

The three-year agreement was signed on Tuesday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja and is expected to improve subsurface knowledge across a large offshore area while providing high-quality data to support future exploration and investment decisions in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the commission’s Head of Corporate Communications and Media, Eniola Akinkuotu.

According to the statement, the seismic project will cover approximately 11,700 square kilometres in the offshore Eastern Niger Delta, spanning water depths ranging from 400 metres to 2,800 metres.

“The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has signed a Petroleum Exploration Licence No. 5 agreement with SeaSeis Geophysical Limited, authorising the company, in partnership with the commission and TGS, to undertake the acquisition and processing of new 3D seismic and gravity data,” the statement read.

The commission noted that the project is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector by improving the availability of high-quality geological data for investors and exploration companies.

Industry stakeholders believe the initiative could help unlock new offshore opportunities and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector.
