The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called for stronger collaboration with the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) to promote fiscal discipline, economic reforms and sustainable development in Nigeria.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by an ACCI delegation to the headquarters of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, the Director-General of ACCI, Agabaidu Jideani, stressed the importance of deepening cooperation with the Commission ahead of the proposed National Stakeholders Policy Dialogue on Fiscal Responsibility Reform, Economic Transformation and Sustainable Development.
Jideani, who was represented by the Executive Director of ACCI and the National Policy Advocacy Centre (NPAC), Dr. Chidiebere Onwumere, described the Fiscal Responsibility Commission as a key institution in Nigeria’s economic governance structure.
According to him, effective implementation of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) 2007 remains critical to strengthening public financial management, reducing wasteful government expenditure and improving accountability in the use of public resources.
He noted that greater collaboration between the private sector and regulatory institutions would enhance the effectiveness and credibility of policy initiatives aimed at driving sustainable economic growth.
“The Fiscal Responsibility Commission remains a critical institution in Nigeria’s economic development framework. Effective implementation of the Fiscal Responsibility Act can significantly improve public financial management, reduce waste and generate cost savings across government institutions,” he said.
Onwumere explained that the proposed National Stakeholders Policy Dialogue would provide a platform for government agencies, private sector operators, policymakers and development partners to discuss reforms needed to improve fiscal governance and accelerate economic transformation.
He added that collaboration with the Commission would contribute significantly to the success of the initiative by ensuring broad stakeholder participation and informed policy recommendations.
The ACCI representative also highlighted the Chamber’s role in supporting business growth and economic development through various programmes and services.
According to him, the Chamber operates business training centres aimed at building entrepreneurial and managerial capacity among businesses.
He noted that ACCI also provides dispute resolution mechanisms for commercial conflicts, helping businesses resolve disagreements efficiently and maintain productive relationships.
In addition, he said the Chamber manages the Abuja Trade Centre, which organises trade fairs, exhibitions and business networking events designed to promote investment, trade and enterprise development.
The visit underscored the growing commitment of the organised private sector to work closely with government institutions in promoting fiscal responsibility, strengthening economic governance and supporting sustainable development initiatives across the country.
Stakeholders believe that stronger collaboration between the ACCI and the Fiscal Responsibility Commission could contribute to improved policy implementation, enhanced transparency and a more conducive environment for business and investment in Nigeria.
