Global Markets Slide as AI Concerns Deepen and Oil Surges Above $100 Per Barrel

Global financial markets came under renewed pressure as a sharp selloff in technology stocks gathered pace, driven by growing concerns over the enormous investments being made in artificial intelligence (AI) and the sustainability of expected returns.

At the same time, a surge in crude oil prices above $100 per barrel reignited fears of higher inflation, prompting investors to move cautiously amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The combination of weakening confidence in AI-related stocks and rising energy costs triggered broad declines across equity markets in Asia and added to concerns about the outlook for global economic growth.

Asian Stocks Extend Global Selloff

Asian stock markets followed Wall Street lower after a significant decline in U.S. equities overnight.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped 2.2%, reflecting widespread weakness across the region as investors reduced exposure to technology shares.

The decline came after the S&P 500 Index recorded its biggest one-day loss in about a month, led by heavy selling in major technology companies.

Market participants said investors are becoming increasingly cautious after months of strong gains driven largely by optimism surrounding artificial intelligence.

While AI has remained one of the strongest investment themes over the past year, questions are now emerging over whether the massive spending by technology companies will generate sufficient long-term financial returns.

Chipmakers Suffer Heavy Losses

Technology stocks were among the worst-performing sectors during the latest market downturn.

South Korean semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., both considered major beneficiaries of the global AI boom, each fell by more than 7% during trading.

The sharp decline reflects growing investor concerns that valuations in the AI sector may have risen too quickly relative to future earnings expectations.

Chip manufacturers have experienced significant gains in recent months due to soaring demand for advanced processors used in artificial intelligence applications.

However, some investors are beginning to question whether current levels of capital expenditure across the industry can continue delivering strong returns.

Nasdaq Futures Signal More Weakness

Investor caution also extended to futures markets.

Equity-index futures pointed to additional losses for the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100, suggesting that selling pressure in technology stocks could continue when U.S. markets reopen.

Meanwhile, futures indicated a relatively flat opening for European stock markets, although investors remain focused on developments in both the energy market and the technology sector.

Analysts believe volatility could remain elevated as markets respond to corporate earnings, inflation expectations, and geopolitical developments.

AI Rally Faces Fresh Questions

Market experts say the latest correction reflects increasing uncertainty over the future of artificial intelligence investments.

Gerald Gan, Chief Investment Officer at Reed Capital in Singapore, said investors are becoming increasingly nervous about whether the AI-driven market rally can maintain its momentum.

According to him, growing doubts over the sustainability of AI-related gains have contributed to recent market weakness.

However, he also suggested that any short-term correction may attract bargain hunters looking to buy quality technology stocks at lower prices.

Gan noted that despite the recent decline, many investors still believe the long-term growth prospects of artificial intelligence remain intact.

For now, he said, the broader investment narrative surrounding AI has not completely changed.

Oil Climbs Above $100 Per Barrel

Adding to market concerns was a sharp increase in global crude oil prices.

Brent crude traded around $100 per barrel, climbing above the psychologically significant level after renewed geopolitical tensions disrupted energy markets.

The latest increase followed attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement on oil tankers in the Red Sea, creating fresh uncertainty over global shipping routes and energy supplies.

The Red Sea remains one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments.

Any disruption to traffic through the region has the potential to increase transportation costs and tighten global oil supplies.

Geopolitical Risks Raise Inflation Concerns

Investor anxiety also intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to expand military strikes targeting Iran.

The possibility of broader conflict in the Middle East has raised fears of prolonged supply disruptions in global energy markets.

Higher oil prices typically translate into increased transportation and production costs, which can eventually push consumer prices higher.

As a result, investors are becoming increasingly concerned that central banks may have to keep interest rates elevated for longer if inflationary pressures persist.

That prospect has weighed heavily on equity markets, particularly growth-oriented technology stocks, which are generally more sensitive to higher borrowing costs.

Investors Brace for Continued Volatility

Financial markets are expected to remain volatile in the coming days as investors closely monitor developments in artificial intelligence, corporate earnings, inflation data, and geopolitical tensions.

While many analysts continue to view AI as a transformative long-term investment theme, the recent selloff highlights growing concerns about valuation levels and the pace of spending across the sector.

At the same time, rising oil prices have introduced a new layer of uncertainty by increasing inflation risks and complicating the outlook for monetary policy.

As global investors balance opportunities in emerging technologies against rising geopolitical and economic risks, markets are likely to remain highly sensitive to new developments that could influence both corporate profitability and global economic stability.
