Brent Crude Holds Above $100 as Middle East Tensions Raise Fresh Global Oil Supply Fears

Global oil prices remained above the $100 per barrel mark on Friday, extending a strong upward trend as investors weighed growing risks to energy supplies from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The latest rally has been driven by concerns over disruptions to shipping routes in the Red Sea, uncertainty surrounding oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, and fears that the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran could widen further.

The sustained rise in crude prices has heightened concerns about global inflation, energy security, and the broader economic outlook, with analysts warning that supply risks are now greater than at any other point since the conflict began.

Brent Crude Extends Weekly Gains

Brent crude futures traded at $101.06 per barrel during early trading on Friday, gaining 37 cents, or 0.37%, by 0330 GMT.

The benchmark contract had already surged by about 7% in the previous trading session, closing above the $100 per barrel threshold for the first time since May.

With the latest gains, Brent crude was on course to record its fourth consecutive week of increases, posting an impressive 14.6% rise for the week.

The sustained rally reflects growing concerns among traders that geopolitical developments could significantly tighten global oil supplies in the weeks ahead.

WTI Crude Also Climbs

U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures remained relatively stable at $91.20 per barrel.

Although price movements were modest during Friday’s session, WTI continued to trade near its highest level since June 11.

The contract was also on track to deliver an 11.8% weekly gain, highlighting the broad strength across global energy markets.

Both Brent and WTI have benefited from increased buying as investors factor in the possibility of prolonged supply disruptions across key oil-producing regions.

Red Sea Attacks Spark Fresh Market Anxiety

One of the key drivers behind the recent surge in oil prices has been renewed attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

Market sentiment shifted sharply after Iran-aligned Houthi forces announced that they had carried out attacks on two Saudi oil tankers navigating the strategic waterway.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East through the Suez Canal.

A significant portion of global crude oil and petroleum products passes through this corridor each day.

Any disruption to shipping in the region raises concerns about delayed deliveries, increased transportation costs, and tighter energy supplies.

As a result, energy traders have responded by pushing oil prices higher in anticipation of possible supply shortages.

Strait of Hormuz Remains a Major Concern

In addition to Red Sea disruptions, investors are also monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil transit routes.

The narrow waterway handles a substantial share of global crude exports from major producers in the Gulf region.

Analysts believe that any prolonged interruption to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could have serious consequences for international energy markets.

Reduced exports from the region would likely tighten global supply, increase competition for available crude, and place further upward pressure on prices.

Analysts Warn of Growing Supply Risks

Analysts at global financial institution ING said the current supply risks facing the oil market are larger than at any point since the conflict began.

In a market note released on Friday, the analysts observed that oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have effectively slowed significantly while additional threats have emerged for Saudi Arabia’s oil exports through the Red Sea.

According to ING, the combination of disrupted shipping routes and heightened military tensions has substantially increased uncertainty surrounding future global oil supplies.

The analysts warned that continued escalation in the Gulf region could place an even larger volume of oil production and transportation at risk.

Geopolitical Tensions Continue to Drive Prices

The broader conflict involving the United States, Israel, Iran, and Iran-backed groups has become a major factor influencing global commodity markets.

Investors are increasingly concerned that further military escalation could spread across additional parts of the Middle East, affecting several major oil-producing countries.

The possibility of wider regional instability has encouraged traders to add a geopolitical risk premium to crude oil prices.

Such premiums typically emerge when markets anticipate potential disruptions to production, exports, or shipping routes that could reduce available supplies.

Higher Oil Prices Could Impact Global Inflation

The continued increase in oil prices is also raising concerns among economists and policymakers.

Higher crude prices generally lead to increased fuel costs, higher transportation expenses, and rising production costs for manufacturers.

These increases often filter through to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services, potentially adding fresh pressure to inflation.

If inflation remains elevated, central banks may be forced to maintain higher interest rates for longer than previously expected, which could slow economic growth and affect financial markets.

Outlook Remains Uncertain

Oil markets are expected to remain highly volatile as investors closely monitor geopolitical developments in the Middle East.

Any signs of further attacks on shipping infrastructure, disruptions to major export routes, or expanded military operations could trigger additional price increases.

Conversely, diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions or restoring secure shipping lanes could help ease supply concerns and stabilize the market.

For now, however, the combination of Red Sea disruptions, uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, and fears of a broader regional conflict continues to support higher oil prices and keep global energy markets on edge.
