Opposition Challenges Tinubu Over Government Spending as Accountability Becomes 2027 Campaign Issue

Opposition Challenges Tinubu Over Government Spending as Accountability Becomes 2027 Campaign Issue

Government spending and accountability are emerging as major battlegrounds in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential campaign, with opposition candidates challenging President Bola Tinubu to explain how significant public resources have been deployed across security, energy and economic programmes.

Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has called for a public debate with Tinubu and demanded greater accountability over what he described as trillions of naira committed to major government interventions.

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has separately increased pressure on the government over insecurity after visiting an internally displaced persons camp in Mangu, Plateau State.

The interventions indicate that opposition candidates intend to make the administration’s economic and security record central to their challenge against the ruling APC.

Security Spending Comes Under Spotlight

Adebayo’s challenge focused partly on resources allocated to security.

For opposition parties, continued insecurity provides an avenue to question whether increased government spending is producing adequate results.

Obi similarly called on the Federal Government to secure communities affected by attacks and facilitate the return of displaced residents.

The Guardian reported that he referred to more than 45,000 displaced Nigerians while discussing the situation in affected communities.

These are politically potent issues because security intersects directly with agriculture, food prices, investment and rural livelihoods.

Communities that cannot farm or conduct normal economic activity because of insecurity impose wider costs on state and national economies.

Competing Economic Narratives

The Tinubu administration and its opponents are also presenting sharply different interpretations of Nigeria’s economic trajectory.

Government supporters point to reforms, increased public revenues and efforts to stabilise the economy.

Opposition politicians have questioned whether improved government revenue has translated into comparable improvements in household living standards and public services.

That divide is likely to become one of the defining themes of the 2027 election.

Rather than simply asking how much government revenue has increased, voters may increasingly focus on where the money has gone and what measurable improvements it has produced.

For the administration, the challenge will be demonstrating that difficult reforms and increased revenues are generating tangible benefits.

For opposition candidates, the task will be presenting credible alternatives rather than simply criticising existing policies.

That competition over economic outcomes, public spending and accountability could ultimately become one of the most consequential debates of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential contest.
