Access Bank Raises Womenpreneur Grant to N7m, Expands Support for Female-Owned Businesses

Access Bank Raises Womenpreneur Grant to N7m, Expands Support for Female-Owned Businesses

Access Bank has increased the maximum grant available under its Womenpreneur Pitch-a-ton programme to N7 million, expanding financial support for female entrepreneurs as Nigerian small businesses continue to contend with high operating costs and limited access to affordable capital.

The bank announced the increase with the commencement of the eighth edition of the initiative, which is designed to provide women-owned businesses with funding, training and business-development support.

The programme forms part of Access Bank’s wider strategy to deepen financial inclusion and strengthen female participation in Nigeria’s entrepreneurial economy.

Beyond Traditional SME Lending

The significance of the initiative is that the funding is structured around business development rather than conventional commercial lending alone.

For many small businesses, borrowing from financial institutions can become difficult when interest costs, collateral requirements and unpredictable cash flows are taken into account.

Grant programmes can therefore provide another route for promising businesses that require capital to expand but may not yet be able to absorb substantial debt.

Access Bank’s approach combines financing with entrepreneurial support, addressing a problem that affects many early-stage businesses: money alone does not necessarily create a sustainable company.

Businesses also require proper accounting, marketing, customer acquisition, operational management and long-term planning.

Women-Owned Businesses Face Financing Gap

Female entrepreneurs make up an important part of Nigeria’s SME economy, particularly across retail, agriculture, fashion, food production, professional services and the digital economy.

But many remain concentrated in smaller enterprises and informal businesses where access to structured finance can be more difficult.

Increasing the grant to N7 million gives successful participants greater capacity to invest in equipment, inventory, technology, staffing or expansion.

The bigger challenge will be ensuring that the programme identifies companies capable of turning that capital into sustainable revenue and employment.

Banks Look Beyond Deposits and Loans

The initiative also demonstrates how competition among Nigerian banks is moving beyond traditional products.

Financial institutions increasingly use SME accelerators, women-focused programmes, technology platforms and business advisory services to build relationships with entrepreneurs before those companies grow into larger corporate clients.

For banks, that creates a commercial opportunity.

A small business receiving support today could become a substantial borrower, payments customer or corporate banking client tomorrow.

For entrepreneurs, however, the immediate value lies in gaining access to capital without taking on additional debt.

The increase to N7 million consequently makes this year’s Womenpreneur programme more financially significant, particularly as the cost of establishing and expanding businesses has increased considerably.
