Naira Strengthens to ₦1,331.56/$ as Nigeria’s External Reserves Hit $55.07bn

The Nigerian naira appreciated against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday, October 12, 2026, closing at ₦1,331.56 per dollar.

The development comes as Nigeria’s gross external reserves stood at $55.07 billion, according to the latest figures contained in the Daily Market Update released by Cordros Securities.

The report showed that the naira gained approximately 0.1 per cent during the trading session, extending its positive year-to-date performance.

The currency’s appreciation provides a modest indication of stability in the official foreign exchange market, although exchange rate movements remain sensitive to changes in dollar demand and supply.

Naira Records Fresh Gain

According to the Cordros report, the official exchange rate settled at ₦1,331.56 per dollar, representing a daily appreciation of approximately 0.08 per cent.

The report also placed the naira’s year-to-date appreciation at 7.77 per cent.

The figures suggest that the local currency has strengthened against the dollar since the beginning of 2026.

A stronger naira can help reduce the local currency cost of dollar-denominated transactions, particularly for businesses importing equipment, raw materials and other goods.

However, the benefits depend on the extent to which exchange rate movements are reflected in actual transaction costs.

Importers may also face additional expenses involving shipping, financing and domestic distribution.

External Reserves Stand at $55.07bn

The market update showed that Nigeria’s gross external reserves reached $55.07 billion as of October 8, 2026.

This compares with $45.57 billion recorded at the beginning of the year.

The difference represents an increase of approximately $9.50 billion.

External reserves are an important component of a country’s international financial position.

They can provide resources for meeting external obligations and supporting confidence in the foreign exchange market.

However, gross reserve balances do not necessarily represent funds that are entirely available for immediate intervention.

The usable portion depends on the composition of reserves and any associated obligations.

Why Reserves Matter to the Naira

Foreign exchange reserves can influence market expectations because they provide an indication of a country’s external financial capacity.

Higher reserves may strengthen confidence in the authorities’ ability to manage external payment obligations.

They may also provide some protection against unexpected disruptions in foreign currency inflows.

Nevertheless, exchange rate stability depends on several other factors.

These include export earnings, foreign investment, import demand, capital flows and broader economic conditions.

A high reserve balance does not guarantee that the naira will appreciate continuously.

Businesses Monitor Currency Stability

Exchange rate movements remain important to Nigerian businesses that depend on imported machinery, technology, fuel and industrial inputs.

When the naira strengthens, the cost of acquiring foreign currency may decline.

This can improve planning for companies with dollar-denominated expenses.

For businesses with foreign currency liabilities, appreciation may also reduce the naira equivalent of certain obligations.

However, exchange rate volatility can complicate pricing and budgeting decisions.

Businesses therefore benefit from a market environment in which foreign exchange is available and exchange rate movements are relatively predictable.

Monetary Conditions Remain Important

The Cordros report also provided a snapshot of Nigeria’s broader monetary environment.

It placed the Monetary Policy Rate at 23 per cent, compared with 27 per cent at the beginning of the year.

The inflation rate was reported at 15.39 per cent, compared with 15.06 per cent at the start of 2026.

These indicators provide additional context for financial market conditions.

Interest rates can influence investment flows and demand for naira-denominated assets.

Inflation also affects purchasing power and the domestic cost of goods and services.

However, the report did not establish a direct causal relationship between these indicators and the naira’s appreciation on October 12.

Outlook Depends on Dollar Supply and Demand

The sustainability of the naira’s recent performance will depend on conditions in the foreign exchange market.

Continued export earnings, investment inflows and confidence in domestic financial markets could support currency stability.

Conversely, stronger demand for foreign currency or weaker inflows could create renewed pressure.

For now, the combination of a modest exchange rate gain and gross reserves above $55 billion provides an encouraging snapshot of Nigeria’s external financial position.

The next challenge will be sustaining market confidence while ensuring that businesses and individuals can access foreign exchange for legitimate economic activities.
