CheckPoint’s June 2024 Global Threat Index Highlights Cybersecurity Challenges in Africa
The latest Global Threat Index for June 2024, released by cybersecurity firm CheckPoint, reveals a concerning rise in malware attacks across several African nations. Ethiopia has emerged as the most targeted country on the continent and the second most attacked globally, with a Normalised Risk Index (NRI) of 99.0. Zimbabwe follows closely, ranking third worldwide with an NRI of 78.1.
Other African countries, such as Angola and Kenya, have also seen significant increases in their malware risk rankings, coming in 6th and 9th respectively, with NRIs of 72.4 and 65.7. Out of 112 countries globally, South Africa is placed at 61st, while Egypt ranks as the least attacked country in the world, positioned at 112th.
These rankings underscore the critical need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across the continent. Despite concerted efforts by governments and organizations to bolster their cyber defenses, the persistent threat of malware remains a significant challenge.
The report calls attention to the growing importance of cybersecurity readiness for both individuals and businesses in Africa. As cyber threats continue to evolve, proactive strategies and robust defenses are essential to mitigate risks and protect digital infrastructure.
