After several postponements, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced that the $2.8 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project has reached 86.05% mechanical completion, with a new target set for the end of November 2025.
Mechanical completion signifies that all essential mechanical work—such as equipment installation, welding, and piping—has been finalized and the project is ready for testing and commissioning.
Initially scheduled for completion in December 2023, the 614-kilometre pipeline project has faced multiple delays, with revised timelines shifting it to Q4 2024 and later Q1 2025.
Speaking at the “2025 AKK Pipeline Progress Update and Opportunities Engagement” held in Abuja, NNPC’s new Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, described the AKK pipeline as a critical milestone in Nigeria’s energy transformation agenda.
“The AKK pipeline is central to our vision of energy security, economic revitalisation, and industrial resilience. We are committed to its timely and efficient delivery,” Ojulari stated.
Once fully operational, the pipeline is expected to significantly boost domestic gas utilization, enhance power generation, and support industrial activities across Northern Nigeria, positioning the region as a hub for energy-led economic growth.
