The cost of cooking gas in Nigeria continues its sharp upward trajectory, with the average retail price for refilling a 5kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder rising by 7.69% month-on-month, according to the latest National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report released on Monday.
The “Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch” report shows the average price for a 5kg refill increased from N7,322.49 in March 2025 to N7,885.60 in April 2025. Larger cylinders experienced even steeper price hikes, with the average cost for a 12.5kg refill jumping 9.82%, from N18,456.24 in March to N20,268.06 in April.
Year-on-year comparisons reveal even more pronounced increases. The price of a 5kg cylinder refill surged by 20.92%, up from N6,521.58 in April 2024, while the 12.5kg cylinder skyrocketed by 29.61%, rising from N15,637.74 over the same period.
Regionally, Rivers State recorded the highest average retail price for a 5kg cylinder refill in April 2025 at N9,103.82. It was closely followed by Ebonyi State at N8,867.24 and Akwa Ibom at N8,655.59. Conversely, the lowest prices were found in Niger (N7,006.15), Plateau (N7,014.87), and Kebbi (N7,032.11).
The rising cost of LPG presents a growing challenge for Nigerian households, many of whom rely on cooking gas as a primary fuel source.
