The planned fuel distribution by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery using 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks has been delayed due to logistics challenges in China.
The $20bn Lekki-based refinery had earlier announced that it would commence direct fuel distribution with the CNG-powered trucks. The initiative was expected to reduce dependence on third-party marketers and strengthen nationwide fuel supply.
However, the exercise, scheduled to begin on August 15, 2025, could not take off as planned. According to findings, only 450 trucks have so far arrived in Lagos, while another 150 are expected next week, bringing the total to 600 trucks.
A senior executive of the Dangote Group, who spoke with The PUNCH on condition of anonymity, confirmed the delay. The official explained that limited shipping capacity between China and Nigeria was responsible for the setback.
“There are not enough ships to transport the trucks from China, which stalled the initial plan to have them delivered before August 15,” the official said.
Despite the delay, the company is said to be working on phased deliveries to ensure that the distribution scheme takes off once a sufficient number of trucks arrive.
