The Federal Government has announced the commencement of the first phase of the Siemens Power Project, a key component of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) aimed at adding 7,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Nigeria’s national grid and improving power stability nationwide.
The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, made this known in Abuja on Monday while receiving a delegation from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), which visited the Federal Ministry of Power to evaluate Nigeria’s progress toward achieving its Mission 300 energy access target.
Adelabu noted that the government had already achieved an additional 700MW through the Presidential Power Initiative and was working to strengthen grid infrastructure to meet the country’s rising energy demand.
“We are enhancing grid extension and expansion through programmes such as the Presidential Power Initiative, which has generated an additional 700 megawatts for us. We are now moving to the first phase of the Siemens project, which will also add 7,000 megawatts to our generation capacity and stabilise supply,” the minister said.
The Siemens Power Project, launched under a partnership between Nigeria and Germany, is designed to modernise transmission and distribution systems, reduce technical losses, and deliver reliable electricity to households and industries.
