FG Begins Phase Two of Siemens Power Project to Boost Grid Capacity

The Federal Government has commenced Phase Two of the Siemens power project, a key component of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure and ultimately delivering 12,000 megawatts (MW) of power to the national grid.

The project follows an agreement signed on December 1, 2023, between the Governments of Nigeria and Germany, which established a partnership to address decades of instability in the nation’s power sector.

Confirming the development, Mr. Bolaji Tunji, Media Adviser to the Minister of Power, disclosed to The PUNCH that work on the second phase officially began after the successful conclusion of financing arrangements with Siemens Energy.

“Phase 2 of the Siemens project is now underway, following the successful finalisation of financing,” Tunji stated. “This phase will deliver seven upgraded existing power lines and ten new ones, spanning 544 kilometres and capable of carrying 7,140 megawatts of electricity.”

He noted that these upgrades form a critical part of the PPI, which seeks to raise transmission capacity in stages, with the long-term goal of achieving the 12,000MW benchmark agreed under the bilateral pact.

Industry analysts say the progress on Phase Two marks a significant step toward resolving Nigeria’s transmission bottlenecks, a major factor behind recurring power outages across the country.
