The Federal Government has disbursed N330 billion to 8.5 million poor households under its conditional cash transfer programme, according to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
Edun, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, explained that some households received one tranche of N25,000, while others received two or three instalments, depending on their eligibility status.
The initiative, coordinated by the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), is part of a $800 million World Bank–supported programme designed to reach 15 million poor households with three instalments of N25,000 each.
So far, only 8.5 million households out of the 15 million target have been reached, leaving millions yet to benefit.
In May, the World Bank raised concerns over the implementation of the programme, noting that it had failed to cover millions of vulnerable Nigerians affected by economic reforms. At the time, only 37 per cent of the targeted households had received support.
The cash transfer initiative was introduced by the Bola Tinubu administration as part of its efforts to cushion the impact of subsidy removal and other economic reforms on low-income families.
