The Federal Government has taken decisive regulatory action against some oil producers for failing to comply with the national gas flare-out programme, as part of its broader efforts to enforce climate commitments and sanitize Nigeria’s upstream oil sector.
Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, made the disclosure during the 24th Nigerian Oil and Gas (NOG) Energy Week held in Abuja.
“Let it be clear: the Commission will not tolerate any Producer that undermines this national climate-action programme, nor will it allow unwilling Awardees to set us back,” Komolafe warned.
He revealed that some producers had failed to execute flare commercialisation agreements, despite repeated engagements. “Our resolve remains firm; we will not relent until the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP) is fully and successfully implemented,” he added.
While expressing concern over the violations, Komolafe commended companies that had demonstrated collaboration and commitment toward the federal government’s flare reduction goals.
The NGFCP is a key component of Nigeria’s energy transition strategy and climate action commitments, aimed at eliminating routine gas flaring by harnessing flared gas for productive use.
