The Federal Government has announced plans to achieve 30 per cent of power generation from renewable energy sources by the year 2030.
Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at the Green Skills Bootcamp themed “Spark the Green Economy.”
According to Abdullahi, Nigeria was the first African country to develop a National Energy Transition Master Plan, a roadmap to net zero emissions. He stressed that while 140 million Nigerians currently have access to electricity, about 90 million citizens remain without power — a gap the government is determined to close.
“The United Nations has mandated energy security for all, and our president is committed to ensuring every Nigerian has access to clean, reliable, and affordable electricity,” he said.
He further recalled that in 2024, the Energy Commission unveiled the first gazetted National Energy Policy and the National Energy Master Plan, both signed by the president. These documents, he said, represent a strong directive that Nigeria’s energy mix must change to accommodate more renewable sources.
With the 2030 target in place, the government hopes to drive sustainable growth, improve energy access, and position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s renewable energy revolution.
