The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has called for deeper collaboration between the FIRS and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) to enhance tax compliance, revenue accountability, and overall fiscal performance in Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja at the opening of the FIRS-OAGF stakeholders’ engagement, themed “Enhancing Tax Compliance through Collaboration”, Adedeji described the Accountant-General’s office as a strategic partner in managing public finances and enforcing tax remittances across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
“The OAGF is not just a treasurer,” Adedeji said. “It is the chief accounting officer of the federation, overseeing financial controls, disbursements, and ensuring transparency in the use of public funds.”
He emphasized that despite the deployment of advanced technologies like the Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System (GIFMIS) and FIRS’ TaxPro MAX, significant lapses persist in areas such as withholding tax deductions, VAT remittances, and stamp duty administration by MDAs.
“These gaps threaten the integrity of our tax system and must be addressed urgently through tighter coordination between the FIRS and the OAGF,” Adedeji added.
The event brought together key stakeholders from across the federal financial management ecosystem to strategize on how best to align systems and enforce compliance in revenue administration.
