Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has emphasized the need for deeper inter-agency collaboration to promote voluntary tax compliance and strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal stability.
Adedeji made the call during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja on Tuesday, where he highlighted the importance of system-driven enforcement over manual monitoring.
“We cannot pursue 200 million Nigerians individually to do the right thing, but we want to put a system in place that will aid compliance,” Adedeji stated.
He appealed to the EFCC to continue supporting the FIRS by reinforcing the message that violations of tax laws carry consequences.
“You can help us by letting people know that when they violate the law, there is a place you can keep them. On behalf of the President and Nigerians, we thank you for your support and seek even deeper cooperation,” he said.
Adedeji also stressed that voluntary tax compliance is more likely when citizens see the impact of government spending.
“The main advertisement of voluntary compliance is when people begin to see what we use the money we collect for,” he added.
The FIRS Chairman noted that beyond enforcement, the EFCC plays a crucial role in assisting the FIRS Fraud Risk, Assessment and Control Department to ensure transparency, accountability, and value for money in government spending.
