Ikeja Electric Plc has issued a public notice informing its customers that electricity bills generated without valid identification details will be considered invalid under the Nigeria Tax Act (2025).
The electricity distribution company said the directive took effect from January 1, 2026, when the Nigeria Tax Act (2025) officially came into force. Under the law, all invoices, including electricity bills, must carry at least one approved form of customer identification.
In the notice made available to our correspondent, Ikeja Electric listed the acceptable identification details as a Tax Identification Number (TIN), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Registration Number, or the National Identification Number (NIN).
The company explained that the requirement is aimed at ensuring compliance with the statutory provisions of the Act and guaranteeing that accurate customer information is reflected on electricity bills from January 2026 and in subsequent billing cycles.
“The Nigeria Tax Act (2025), which came into effect on January 1, 2026, mandates that all invoices—including electricity bills—must contain at least one of the following identification details: Tax Identification Number, CAC Registration Number, or National Identification Number,” the company stated.
Ikeja Electric urged its customers to submit any one of the required identification details by completing the designated form provided by the company.
“To enable us to comply with this statutory requirement and reflect the information on your January 2026 and subsequent bills, we kindly request that you provide any one of the above details,” the notice read.
The electricity distributor announced February 13, 2026, as the deadline for submission of the required information. It warned that failure to comply may have serious consequences for affected customers.
“Please note that the deadline for submission is February 13, 2026,” the company stated.
According to Ikeja Electric, any invoice issued without the mandatory identification details will be regarded as invalid under the law. Customers who fail to provide the required information may be unable to receive electricity bills after the deadline.
“In line with the provisions of the Act, any invoice issued without this information is considered invalid. Consequently, failure to provide the required details may prevent us from generating your electricity bill and could lead to the suspension of service after the stated deadline,” the company added.
The distribution company appealed to customers to cooperate and comply promptly to avoid disruption of services.
