The Lagos State Government has issued a final warning to estate developments operating without approved layout plans across the state, threatening stiff sanctions for continued violations.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, issued the warning during an on-the-spot sensitisation and enforcement exercise carried out across parts of the Eti-Osa corridor on Tuesday.
According to him, the action followed the expiration of the grace period earlier granted to all flagged estates to regularise their planning documents.
Dr Olumide said the state government had on several occasions stressed the importance of obtaining proper approvals before engaging in land subdivision, property sales or construction activities.
He explained that some of the affected estates had continued to operate in blatant violation of planning regulations despite repeated notices and warnings.
“The government will no longer tolerate developments that compromise orderly and sustainable urban growth,” the commissioner said.
He reiterated that the final one-week warning issued to erring estates represents their last opportunity to submit layout plans and obtain the necessary approvals.
Dr Olumide added that after the expiration of the deadline, the government would impose appropriate sanctions, ranging from heavy fines to outright demolition, depending on the severity of each infraction.
The commissioner also advised members of the public, particularly prospective homebuyers, to always verify the planning approval status of any estate before committing their funds.
He emphasised that due diligence remains critical in preventing financial losses associated with illegal property developments.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing planning laws to protect the environment and ensure orderly, safe and sustainable development across the state.
During the enforcement exercise, officials visited several estates, including Whiteoak Estate 2 behind VGC and Elite Garden Estate, developed by Bosmark Haven Properties Limited, also located behind VGC.
