The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expressed concern over the call for ‘peaceful’ protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in response to the fuel subsidy removal. The Chamber fears that such protests, while a democratic right, might be hijacked by hoodlums, potentially leading to the disruption of efforts by the government to alleviate the sufferings of the masses.
The LCCI recognizes that peaceful protests are part of democratic processes and acknowledges the rights of organized labor to voice their concerns. However, it emphasizes that these protests could have detrimental impacts on the organized private sector and the overall economy. The timing of the protests is also a matter of concern, as the nation is currently facing economic challenges with rising prices of essentials and transportation.
Despite acknowledging the economic and social impacts of the subsidy removal on citizens, the LCCI believes that the government should be given more time to address the issues arising from the removal. The Chamber calls for calm and urges all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue. It believes that through open and amicable discussions, valid arguments and concerns from both sides can be addressed for the overall health of the economy.
The President/Chairman of Council, Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Dr. Michael Olawale-Cole, encourages stakeholders to seek peaceful solutions and work together to find a way forward. The statement was issued on August 2, 2023.
The situation remains sensitive as the debate over the fuel subsidy removal continues, and both the government and labor unions are urged to approach the matter with caution and consideration for the well-being of the economy and the people.
