The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has announced plans to issue policy directives regarding the in-country manufacturing capabilities of critical equipment used in the oil and gas industry. These equipment categories, including pumps, flanges, valves, and others, account for a significant portion of capital and operational expenditures in the sector. The move aims to enhance local content implementation, eliminate briefcase contractors, create job opportunities, and add value within Nigeria.
Engr. Simbi Kesiye Wabote, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, revealed the forthcoming policy directives while receiving the report from the industry-wide implementation committee responsible for overseeing the in-country manufacturing of pumps, valves, flanges, gaskets, bolts, and nuts. The committee, which was established on July 7, 2022, comprised members from international and indigenous operating and service companies, as well as NCDMB staff.
Wabote expressed the Board’s commitment to thoroughly reviewing the committee’s report and implementing its recommendations in the short, medium, and long term. He emphasized that the implementation of Nigerian Content aims to eliminate the presence of briefcase contractors, foster local value addition, and generate employment opportunities for Nigeria’s growing population.
Highlighting the challenging nature of Nigerian Content implementation, Wabote described it as a marathon rather than a sprint. He further explained that meeting targets and percentages outlined in the Nigerian Content Act’s schedule is an aspirational process that requires continuous effort and collaboration.
The issuance of policy directives on local manufacturing in the oil and gas sector signifies the NCDMB’s dedication to strengthening the nation’s capabilities and promoting indigenous participation in the industry. By encouraging local production of vital equipment, Nigeria aims to reduce reliance on imports, retain more value within the country, and stimulate economic growth.
Stakeholders in the oil and gas sector will keenly observe the implementation of the policy directives, as it has the potential to drive significant advancements in local content development and job creation. The NCDMB’s ongoing efforts align with the broader goal of fostering a sustainable and self-reliant oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
