The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Budget Office of the Federation, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), officially launching the ₦100 billion National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI).
The government-led programme aims to accelerate the deployment of distributed solar energy solutions across Nigeria’s public sector institutions, including schools, hospitals, security posts, and government offices. The initiative seeks to reduce reliance on diesel, lower the public sector’s carbon footprint, and ensure clean, reliable power supply to critical infrastructure nationwide.
According to a statement from the REA, the signing ceremony—held at the Budget Office of the Federation—underscored the urgent need to transition public sector energy consumption to renewable sources. The NPSSI also aims to promote local renewable energy infrastructure development and move away from unsustainable energy financing mechanisms.
REA described the agreement as a milestone in fostering stronger alliances between government and private sector stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy sector. By prioritising clean energy adoption, the initiative is expected to boost energy efficiency, stimulate green investments, and improve service delivery across vital public institutions.
