The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, has disclosed that broadband subscriptions in Nigeria increased from 96.3 million in 2024 to over 109.6 million in 2025.
Dr Maida made this known while unveiling the Commission’s roadmap in his New Year’s message to stakeholders and consumers. He said the growth pushed Nigeria’s broadband penetration to 50.58 per cent, reflecting significant progress in the country’s digital connectivity drive.
According to him, median 4G download speeds also recorded an improvement of about 24 per cent within the period, driven largely by expanded network infrastructure nationwide.
“Over the year, operators deployed over 2,800 new and upgraded sites, strengthening both coverage and capacity nationwide. As a result, broadband subscriptions grew by 6% from about 96.3 million to over 109.6 million from December 2024 to December 2025, lifting broadband penetration from 44.43% to 50.58% today,” Maida said.
Despite the gains, the NCC boss charged telecommunications operators to meet stricter quality-of-service benchmarks in 2026, stressing that network expansion must be matched with improved service delivery.
He also pledged stronger regulatory enforcement by the Commission, noting that consumer trust remains critical to sustaining investment and long-term growth in the sector.
Dr Maida warned that while infrastructure development and investment are vital, failure to balance consumer protection with industry sustainability could undermine the progress achieved so far.
