The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported yesterday that the number of active telecom voice subscribers in Nigeria increased by 0.96 per cent from 222,571,568 in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 224,713,710 in the same quarter of 2023. The data, outlined in the report titled “Telecoms Data: Active Voice and Internet per State, Porting, and Tariff Information (Q4 2023),” also indicated a quarterly rise of 1.33 per cent.
In the realm of internet subscribers, the report revealed that the total number of active internet subscribers in Q4 2023 stood at 163,838,439, showcasing a notable increase of 5.81 per cent from 154,847,901 reported in the corresponding quarter of 2022. Additionally, the quarterly growth rate for internet subscribers was recorded at 2.29 per cent.
The state profile analysis in the NBS report highlighted that Lagos State led in the number of active voice subscribers during Q4 2023, with 26,739,346 subscribers. Ogun followed with 13,070,779 subscribers, and Kano ranked third with 12,325,633 subscribers.
The positive trajectory in both active voice and internet subscribers underscores the continued growth and adoption of telecommunication services in Nigeria. The telecom sector’s ability to expand its subscriber base reflects the increasing reliance on communication technologies across the country.
