The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has categorically refuted claims circulating on social media about a breach in the Nigerian database and the alleged sale of citizens’ data online. Speaking on ARISE NEWS Channels, Lanre Yusuf, Director of IT/IDD at NIMC, and Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications, addressed the allegations, asserting that there is no ongoing breach of the NIMC database.
Yusuf emphasized that while data harvesting has become a concern in the identity management sector globally, the NIMC strictly partners with licensed data verification entities. These partners are mandated to ensure that no unauthorized access occurs without undergoing rigorous verification procedures.
“As I speak, there is no data breach,” Yusuf stated unequivocally. He clarified that reports of NIMC identity slips being sold for as little as N100 online are unfounded. According to him, perpetrators are fabricating counterfeit NIMC slips, which do not pass the necessary verification protocols and therefore cannot access the official Nigerian database.
Adegoke echoed Yusuf’s sentiments, highlighting the NIMC’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Nigerian citizens’ data. He reassured the public that stringent measures are in place to prevent unauthorized access or exploitation of the NIMC database.
The NIMC officials urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities online and to verify the authenticity of any identity-related transactions through official channels. They encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly to law enforcement agencies or the NIMC for swift action.
In conclusion, NIMC reiterated its stance on data security and affirmed its dedication to maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of Nigeria’s national identity database amidst evolving challenges in the digital age.
