The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, has revealed that the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery has begun transforming Nigeria’s petroleum supply landscape by contributing an average of 20 million litres of fuel daily to the domestic market.
Ahmed made this known on Thursday in Lagos during his address at the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) Annual Conference, where he outlined the Authority’s key interventions aimed at strengthening energy security, boosting investment, and stabilising petroleum supply.
He described the refinery’s operation as a major milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of domestic refining sufficiency and energy independence, noting that the plant has significantly altered the country’s fuel supply dynamics.
“Without a shadow of a doubt, the operation of the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery has changed the supply dynamics, with an average daily contribution of up to 20 million litres, undoubtedly with potential for a future ramp-up,” Ahmed stated.
According to him, the company is gradually ramping up production to ensure sufficient local supply to meet Nigeria’s average daily fuel consumption, estimated at 50 million litres per day.
Ahmed commended the refinery’s progress, describing it as a turning point for Nigeria’s downstream sector and a strong indicator of the country’s capacity to achieve self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products.
