The House of Representatives has indicted 31 federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) over financial irregularities amounting to over ₦103.8 billion and $950,912.05, as uncovered in the Auditor-General’s Annual Reports for 2019 and 2020.
The decision came after a motion by Rep. Bamidele Salam on Tuesday, based on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)’s review of the reports, which exposed widespread internal control weaknesses and non-compliance by government entities.
In a move to ensure transparency and accountability, the House directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to pursue the indicted MDAs and recover all misappropriated funds for remittance into the national treasury.
One notable case cited in the 2019 findings involved the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was indicted for unauthorised spending on a presidential lodge project at the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia.
The House adopted PAC’s recommendations in accordance with its Standing Orders, pledging to enforce sanctions and recover stolen public funds. Lawmakers stressed the need for stronger oversight and compliance mechanisms across all government institutions.
