Small and medium enterprises in Nigeria risk losing customers and growth opportunities if they fail to establish a strong digital presence, a digital entrepreneur, Adedapo Micheal, has warned.
Micheal, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Dleading Web Design Ltd, said the shift in consumer behaviour means most customers now search online before making purchasing decisions, making online visibility essential for business survival.
According to him, businesses that are not visible online are effectively cut off from a significant portion of potential customers, noting that digital presence has become a key driver of trust, customer acquisition, and revenue growth.
“Today, most customers check online before engaging with any business. If your business is not visible online, it simply means you are missing out on many potential customers,” he said.
He explained that many SMEs make avoidable mistakes that hinder their online growth, including relying solely on social media without owning websites, inconsistent branding, and poor understanding of their target audience. Other challenges include weak search engine visibility and treating digital platforms without a clear strategy.
While acknowledging the importance of social media, Micheal cautioned against overdependence on such platforms, noting that they are controlled by third parties. He described websites as a business’s “digital property,” offering greater control, credibility, and improved visibility on search engines.
“The best approach is to combine social media with a functional website. One supports engagement while the other builds long-term credibility,” he added.
The entrepreneur also highlighted growing opportunities in Nigeria’s digital economy, noting that skills such as web design, graphic design, video editing, digital marketing, content creation, and user experience design are increasingly in demand.
He said young Nigerians can earn income through digital platforms by working with international clients, building personal brands, and creating digital products, although success requires consistency and patience.
Micheal identified lack of guidance, inconsistency, fear of starting, and impatience as major barriers preventing many youths from monetising their skills, urging them to focus on action and continuous learning.
He added that SMEs can begin their digital transformation with minimal financial investment by setting up professional social media pages, building simple but functional websites, maintaining consistent branding, and creating regular content. He also recommended listing businesses on platforms like Google Business Profile to improve visibility.
Looking ahead, Micheal pointed to emerging trends such as the rise of artificial intelligence in business operations, the expansion of e-commerce, and increasing opportunities in remote work and global freelancing.
He stressed that the digital economy provides an avenue for businesses and individuals to grow beyond geographical limitations, urging stakeholders to embrace technology as a pathway to competitiveness and innovation.
Micheal added that his mission through Dleading Web Design Ltd is to help businesses build strong online identities while encouraging young Nigerians to leverage the internet as a platform for opportunity and economic advancement.
