The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has officially unveiled 80 approved standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for road vehicles and related appliances to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). This significant development marks the initiation of efforts towards promoting safer, more reliable, cheaper, and environmentally sustainable alternative fuel utilization across the country.
The Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, approved the Standards and Guidelines for CNG road vehicles and related appliances, highlighting SON’s commitment to excellence and innovation in accordance with international best practices.
In a statement issued by SON’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Foluso Bolaji, the release of these landmark regulations signifies a substantial milestone in the organization’s endeavors to enhance safety and quality within the energy sector. The standards aim to ensure the safe and efficient utilization of CNG, which serves as a clean and efficient alternative to traditional fuels, with diverse applications spanning transportation to industrial processes.
The rigorous standards cover various aspects of CNG production, storage, transportation, and utilization, reflecting SON’s dedication to upholding safety, reliability, and environmental sustainability in the adoption of alternative fuels.
The adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel holds immense potential for Nigeria, offering numerous benefits such as reduced emissions, cost-effectiveness, and energy security. However, to fully realize these advantages, adherence to comprehensive standards is crucial to ensure the safety and reliability of CNG utilization in road vehicles and related appliances.
SON’s initiative underscores the organization’s proactive approach towards promoting technological advancement and fostering a conducive environment for the adoption of sustainable energy solutions. By providing robust standards for CNG utilization, SON aims to facilitate the widespread adoption of cleaner and more efficient energy sources, contributing to Nigeria’s economic development and environmental conservation efforts.
