President Bola Tinubu has approved a research grant of ₦4,249,626,817.69 for the funding of 158 groundbreaking research projects under the 2024 cycle of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF). The approval followed the recommendations of the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC), which conducted an extensive and competitive screening exercise involving 6,944 Concept Notes submitted by researchers from across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the Director of Public Affairs at TETFund, Abdulmumin Oniyangi, the allocation covers three major thematic areas. The Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) group received the largest share of the funding, while Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and Cross-Cutting (CC) projects also received significant financial backing. The initiative, according to TETFund, is aimed at fostering research excellence, encouraging innovation, and supporting academic development across the country.
Among the institutions with the highest number of successful research proposals are the Federal University of Technology, Minna, which secured 15 awards worth over ₦400 million; Ahmadu Bello University, which received 13 awards valued at ₦359.8 million; and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, with 12 awarded projects amounting to ₦341.6 million.
The TETFund NRF 2024 grant reflects the federal government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the research ecosystem and building a robust knowledge-driven economy through sustained investment in academia.
