Succour is on the horizon for low-income retirees under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate rollout of a free healthcare initiative tailored to their needs.
Describing the scheme as a “critical component of social protection and dignity in retirement,” Tinubu issued the directive on Wednesday after a briefing from the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House in Abuja.
According to presidential spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President also called for the urgent implementation of long-overdue pension increases and the activation of a minimum pension guarantee, designed to offer a financial safety net to the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS.
In a related directive, Tinubu ordered PenCom to swiftly resolve lingering issues around police pensions, stressing that law enforcement personnel must be allowed to retire with dignity and peace of mind, in recognition of their service to the nation.
Ms. Oloworaran, in her briefing, highlighted ongoing efforts by the commission to preserve the value of pension assets amid inflationary and macroeconomic challenges.
The President’s new push is seen as a major step toward improving post-retirement welfare and strengthening trust in Nigeria’s pension system.
