The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Aminu Maida, has confirmed that the 5 per cent telecom excise duty has been completely removed under the new tax legislation signed by President Bola Tinubu.
Maida made the disclosure during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. He explained that although the duty had earlier been suspended, the President insisted on its total elimination to ease the financial burden on subscribers.
“The excise duty, it was the 5 per cent or so, that is no longer there. Before it was suspended, but now the president has been magnanimous to remove it entirely. I was very pleased when the bills came out and we saw his words were followed through,” Maida said.
He added that the removal of the levy would reduce cost pressures on telecom users, stimulate wider industry growth, and encourage investments.
The NCC boss further noted that ongoing reforms in the telecom sector are anchored on transparency, accountability, and consumer protection. He disclosed that the Commission is moving beyond traditional rule-based regulation to adopt behavioural economics, providing consumers and operators with more information to make informed choices.
