Togo’s GDP per capita has crossed the $1,300 mark in 2025, driven by stronger economic activity and a recent demographic revision by the United Nations.
In January 2026, the UN Population Division released an interim update of Togo’s demographic estimates, reflecting detailed results from the 2022 general census. The revision corrected a gap of around 12% compared with previous estimates, slightly lowering the population figures for 2022 and 2023.
Population data directly influence GDP per capita, calculated by dividing national output by the total number of residents. With a downward revision of the population and constant economic output, the GDP per capita rises mechanically.
According to the updated figures:
GDP per capita was $1,206.93 in 2023
Increased to $1,281.04 in 2024
Exceeded $1,300 in 2025
The growth was supported by Togo’s sustained economic expansion, estimated above 6% in 2025, combined with a slight slowdown in population growth. The natural population growth rate declined from 2.36% in 2024 to 2.34% in 2025, further boosting the per capita measure.
GDP per capita remains a key indicator for measuring average wealth and comparing economic performance internationally. Rating agencies, international financial institutions, and technical partners use the metric in their assessments of national economic health.
The crossing of the $1,300 threshold reflects a dual dynamic: an increase in national output and a refinement of the demographic base underpinning Togo’s macroeconomic indicators.
