The Federal Government has announced plans for a major upgrade of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, just months after spending N21 billion on emergency repairs.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja that a fresh N3.8 trillion has been allocated to address severe structural damage threatening the bridge’s safety.
According to Umahi, recent underwater and structural assessments revealed that illegal sand mining, erosion, and corrosion have significantly weakened the piles and piers supporting the bridge. Similar assessments on the Carter Bridge showed it was beyond repair, with Julius Berger recommending full replacement at an estimated cost of N359 billion.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has issued a traffic advisory ahead of emergency repairs on the Maryland Independence Bridge. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the works, targeting damaged wall sections and expansion joints, will take place from Saturday, August 16, to Tuesday, August 19, 2025, between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. daily.
