Dangote Cement Plant, Obajana, has launched its 2025 Sustainability Week with an expanded lineup of activities promoting sportsmanship, education, and community partnership under the theme “Sustainable Progress: Celebrating Growth and Partnerships.” The week-long event, which began on October 24, has been designed to support holistic development in host communities, the company announced in a statement on Wednesday.
The celebrations began with a football tournament involving teams from Dangote Cement’s workforce, Dangote Cement Transport, and surrounding communities. The grand finale, held on October 29 at the Obajana Academy Field, saw the Oyo Community Football Team defeat Dangote Cement Transport 1–0 to emerge champions. The event drew a lively crowd and was attended by senior management, including Plant Director, Mr. Azad Nawabuddin, and other senior officials.
According to the company, the football games were organised not only to promote physical wellness but also to foster unity, collaboration, and mutual respect among employees and community members.
In addition to sports, an Inter-School Spelling Bee and Quiz Competition featured ten secondary schools from host communities. Golden Vessels Academy, Obajana, clinched the top position in the Spelling Bee, showcasing the firm’s commitment to academic improvement and youth empowerment.
Speaking at the launch, Plant Director, Mr. Nawabuddin, said the expanded programme reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening community bonds.
“Our investment in sports and education is a deliberate commitment to the holistic well-being of community members,” he stated. “The football tournament builds character and deepens collaboration, while the Spelling Bee develops intellectual capacity and leadership among young people.”
Head of HAM-Admin/HR, Mr. Peter Agba, added that the approach of combining physical activities with academic engagement creates a balanced foundation for sustainable development.
The 2025 Sustainability Week will continue with environmental projects, health awareness drives, and skill development workshops. Dangote Cement also reaffirmed that its community empowerment activities will continue throughout the year through recurring programmes.
