The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has clarified the role of Xpress Payments in its national revenue collection framework, dismissing claims that the platform serves as the sole gateway for government tax remittances.
According to Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, the current revenue system is multi-channel, relying on several approved Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs). These include Quickteller, Remita, Etranzact, Flutterwave, and XpressPay, all of which operate within a competitive environment to make tax payments more convenient for individuals and businesses nationwide.
She explained that PSSPs are not designated as collection agents and do not earn processing fees or retain any share of government revenues. Instead, all funds remitted through these digital platforms are transferred directly into the Federation Account, ensuring transparency and preventing private custody of public funds.
Atoyebi emphasised that the system’s design protects the integrity of national revenue flows while supporting efficiency, digital access and taxpayer convenience.
