The Bank of Industry (BOI) has formally handed over a newly built 30-room medical students’ hostel block at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) College of Health Sciences, Nnewi Campus.
The facility was officially received by the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Stanley Anyaehie, on behalf of the university’s board and management.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, BOI Managing Director, Olasupo Olusi, represented by the Executive Director of Large Enterprises, Omar Shekarau, described the completion of the hostel as a key milestone in the bank’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Dr Olusi highlighted that the facility would support learning, strengthen healthcare services, and improve the welfare of medical students. “Medical training is demanding. Long hours, emergency calls, and night duties require proximity, safety, and stability. Adequate accommodation is therefore not a convenience but a necessary condition for effective learning and patient care,” he said.
He added that the hostel would provide a secure and dignified living environment, enabling students to focus fully on their training, and stressed that the project reflects broader national priorities in healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
Earlier, Professor Anyaehie thanked BOI for its investment and expressed the university’s desire to collaborate on future infrastructural projects. The Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, Professor Joe Ugboaja, represented by Dr Ezejiofor, noted that the hostel enhances the campus infrastructure and underscores the synergy between NAU Awka, which admits medical students, and NAUTH, which trains them.
A representative of the Akamiri community, Chief Caleb Okeke, praised the establishment of the institution in the area, noting that the new hostel would provide affordable and convenient accommodation for students within the university community.
