The Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Adamu Adaji, has reaffirmed the commission’s support for the ongoing review of Nigeria’s Border Management System, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s border governance framework.
This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of Information, Press and Public Relations Unit of the commission, Chinwe Udouwem.
According to the statement, Adaji received members of the committee reviewing Nigeria’s Border Management System at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The committee was established by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, to enhance Nigeria’s border management architecture in response to evolving national and regional security challenges.
In his remarks, Adaji commended the minister’s initiative, describing it as a timely intervention aimed at improving national security through effective border governance reforms.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting the committee’s assignment and ensuring the successful implementation of its mandate.
The NBC Director-General emphasised that effective border governance is critical to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, strengthening peaceful inter-state relations, and addressing emerging security threats.
He identified terrorism, arms trafficking, irregular migration, transnational organised crime, and climate-induced displacement as key challenges requiring urgent attention.
Adaji further called for a holistic and collaborative approach involving security agencies, border communities, sub-national governments, traditional institutions, and regional partners.
He also highlighted the importance of investments in border infrastructure, modern surveillance technology, intelligence-sharing systems, and enhanced cross-border cooperation.
According to him, the Local Cross-Border Cooperation Platforms established by the commission along Nigeria’s international borders continue to play a vital role in promoting trust, social cohesion, and coordinated responses to shared security challenges.
In his response, the leader of the committee, Brigadier General M.B. Shehu, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and sought the continued cooperation of the commission in achieving the committee’s objectives.
The review is expected to contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s border security framework and improving coordination among agencies responsible for safeguarding the country’s frontiers.
