LASERC Issues Licences to 14 Operators, Moves to Strengthen Lagos Electricity Market

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the Lagos electricity market through smart regulation and stakeholder collaboration.

The commission also issued licences and permits to 14 operators across the state’s electricity value chain.

Speaking at LASERC’s maiden Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum held in Ikeja on Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Member of the commission, Temitope George, described the forum as a major milestone in the development of Lagos State’s electricity sector.

According to her, the engagement reflects the commission’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and stakeholder inclusion.

George stated that the forum marks the beginning of a new regulatory phase focused on building a functional, efficient, innovative, and consumer-centred electricity market capable of supporting Lagos State’s economic growth.

She reiterated the commission’s vision of becoming a leading electricity regulator by promoting sustainable electricity development and improving residents’ quality of life.

George added that LASERC remains committed to setting and enforcing standards, protecting consumers, encouraging investments, supporting innovation, and promoting clean energy solutions across the state.

As part of efforts to strengthen consumer protection, she disclosed that the commission is establishing zonal offices in Ikorodu, Amuwo Odofin/Badagry, and Sangotedo/Epe to improve complaint resolution and access to regulatory services.

“The offices are expected to become operational in the third quarter of the year,” she said.

George stressed that sustainable progress in the electricity sector can only be achieved through strong partnerships, shared responsibility, and continuous stakeholder engagement.

She also noted that ongoing reforms in the Lagos electricity ecosystem are creating opportunities for investment, infrastructure development, innovation, and the adoption of modern clean energy technologies.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the commission’s regulatory agenda, market performance updates, retail service code, and regulatory orders.

The presentations were delivered by George, Executive Member for Licensing and Economic Regulation, Olakunle Falola, Executive Member for Engineering and Standards, Adekunle Olopade, and Lagos Independent System Operator Network Operator representative, Adetunji Adesanya.

According to LASERC, the presentations provided stakeholders with insights into the commission’s short-term and long-term strategies aimed at strengthening the Lagos electricity market.

The Board Chairman of LASERC, Alexander Ogunbiyi, also presented licences and permits to 14 compliant operators in recognition of their adherence to regulatory requirements and industry standards.

The commission said the development reinforces its commitment to building a structured, accountable, and fully regulated electricity market in Lagos State.

The forum featured interactive discussions on industry challenges and sustainable growth strategies, with participation from development partners, investors, market operators, consumer groups, artisans, community representatives, and members of the media.
