Dutch brewing giant Heineken has announced the appointment of Rafael Oliveira as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the departure of longtime CEO Dolf van den Brink earlier this year.
The company disclosed on Tuesday that Oliveira, who previously held a senior leadership role at coffee company JDE Peet’s, has been nominated to take over the top position. His appointment remains subject to shareholder approval.
The leadership transition comes after Van den Brink stepped down in January, ending a six-year tenure marked by both growth opportunities and operational challenges.
Welcoming the appointment, Heineken Supervisory Board Chairman Peter Wennink expressed confidence in Oliveira’s ability to guide the company through its next phase of development.
“With Rafa at the helm, we look forward to building on Heineken’s strong foundations and continuing our journey of long-term, balanced growth,” Wennink said in a statement.
Oliveira assumes leadership at a time when the brewer is navigating a challenging business environment. In April, Heineken reported that beer sales declined by nearly one percent during the first quarter of the year, attributing the slowdown to a more complex global economic climate and rising energy costs.
The company has also embarked on a major cost-cutting programme. In February, Heineken announced plans to reduce its workforce by up to 6,000 jobs as part of efforts to improve efficiency and strengthen profitability.
Despite the challenges, Oliveira expressed optimism about the company’s future prospects and pledged to accelerate growth while adapting the business to changing consumer demands.
“I am confident we will accelerate growth, drive productivity and future-fit Heineken, winning the hearts of consumers worldwide,” he said.
Industry analysts will be closely watching Oliveira’s strategy as he takes charge of one of the world’s largest brewing companies during a period of economic uncertainty and shifting consumer preferences.
His appointment marks a significant leadership change for Heineken as the company seeks to restore momentum and strengthen its position in the highly competitive global beverage market.
